Indian mobile users now have the option to avoid unwanted telemarketing calls by registering their mobile phone number in the NDNC registry.

The main features :
A customer may choose between ‘fully blocked’ category or ‘partially blocked’ category and The ‘partially blocked’ category, in which case he will receive SMS in the category/categories chosen by him.


There are seven categories :

1. Banking/Insurance/Financial products/credit cards
2. Real Estate
3. Education
4. Health
5. Consumer goods and automobiles
6. Communication/Broadcasting/Entertainment/IT
7. Tourism and Leisure.

To register his number, one can call on 1909 or SMS to 1909. You can check if your number is registered under
DND or Do Not Disturb registry or now. A new system is designed where both Telemarketers and the service providers filter numbers which are under DND. This way even if the Telemarketers try to skip your mobile operator will keep it clean.

A separate numbering series 70XXXXXXXX will be allocated for telemarketers, so that all telemarketing calls can be easily identified. Likewise, a unique SMS header has been mandated for easy identification of commercial SMSs. Even for unregistered numbers, No commercial calls can be placed between 9.00 PM to 9.00AM.


How to Opt in and Out using SMS for DND ?

Change Options by sending SMS to 1909.

Fully blocked : SMS START 0
START 1 : SMS relating to Banking/Insurance/Financial products/credit cards
START 2: SMS relating to Real Estate.
START 3 : SMS relating to Education .
START 4: SMS relating to Health .
START 5 : SMS relating to Consumer goods and automobiles.
START 6 : SMS relating to Communication/Broadcasting/ Entertainment/IT
START 7 : SMS relating to Tourism and Leisure

How much Telemarketers will be penalized for ?

The telemarketers are now required to enter into an agreement with the service providers with a security deposit.

    First offence Rs. 25,000/-
    Second offence, 75,000/-
    Third offence Rs.80,000/-
    Fourth offence Rs.1,20,000/-
    Fifth offence Rs. 1,50,000/-
    Sixth offence Rs.2,50,000/-

These penalties will be deducted by the service providers and will be collected and deposited to TRAI when it happens. Once Blacklisted after 6th offence, they will be dropped from all the service providers for 2 years. IMO these regulations are huge if implemented properly. If the Filter system works and the numbers are unique for telemarketers it gives easy option for subscribers to just cancel the call.

However one keen issue that regularly happens is SMS from numbers which are not registered as TeleMarketers but are used to send SMS or even call. TRAI hopefully one day will come with an option where a compliant can be registered against such numbers.

OLD METHOD:

For customers who would like to register/de-register their request for NDNC registry may dial 1909 or SMS to 1909 with keywords ‘START DND’ for registration and ‘STOP DND’ for de-registration.

Its been a while since this new service has been provided. But lot of us do not know how to use this service. So we decided to throw a light to this.

After a long wait and numerous missed deadlines, mobile number portability (MNP) is finally here.MNP will usher in an era of new freedom for mobile subscribers in the country. The technology will allow subscribers to change their mobile service provider without the fear of losing their old mobile number.


Here’s all about how MNP works in six simple steps.

Step 1
Send an SMS to 1900 in following format: PORT – eg. PORT 9999999999.

Step 2
You will get an SMS reply that contains a unique porting code.

Step 3
SMS to the preferred operator quoting the unique code. This code is valid only for a few days, and one must apply again if it expires.


Step 4
Your existing operator will check with new operator & if there are no dues then approval will be given for porting.

Step 5
You will get an SMS on the time and date when porting will take place. Rules mandate that process be completed within 4 days of applying.

Step 6
After porting is complete, wait for an SMS from your new operator confirming the switch. Your phone may be dead for about 2 hours when the porting takes place.

Hey guys, recently I had to format my laptop. There were few bugs that destroyed my files. So, most importantly I needed to backup my personal files and firefox settings, history and cookies including my passwords. Because, I have been saving bookmarks, pages, passwords from 3 years. So, you can imagine, how important it was for me to back up all those. I googled first for any such software that could do this job for me. And thankfully I found few. But for those who don’t want to use such softwares can do this manually. And believe me, manually taking backup is just as simple as copying a folder.



Taking a backup is also useful if you want to export your settings to another computer. So, this technique will be quite handy than copying all things manually one by one. Better do all at once. So there are many ways to do this. But I find following methods easier than any other method.

As I was telling, I googled the software to backup firefox. The first result that showed up was MozBackup. It was free and small. I got it and backed up my data. There are several features like you can have backup of only those files, which you want. Like you can choose:- General Settings, Emails, Address Books, Bookmarks, History, Sidebars, Cookies, Downloaded File list, Certificates, Cache … Its your choice either choose all to have a complete backup or choose selected ones that you want to save. Nothing will be lost.

Now, the advantage of using MozBackup is that its damn fast and got a user friendly interface.

One more thing, Mozbackup is not a software which requires installation, its more like a tool. So you can use it even if you don’t have permission to install any software. Just to be clear, better download the zipped file so that you can have the setup files stored when you need in future. Now, if you want to take the backup manually, here are few steps:
1. Locate where is your firefox folder is. Not the program files one(in windows). The one we have to find is inside the Application Data. Here is the default path:-
i) For Windows xp/2003 users :
C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
ii) For Windows Vista/7 users :
C:\users\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles


This is the folder we want. Just copy this folder to another partition or media. Thats it. You have your folder (Bookmarks, profiles, settings, password files) backed up. Now you can format your pc or uninstall firefox and whenever you need these files, just paste them back to the location from where it has been copied i.e the path shown above.

Another option is the “Firefox Backup Plugin” from backup4all. Its a xml file.


One more option is to carry a portable version of firefox, so that you can transfer files anytime you want. But, it is damn slow and you will never want to use it until you are ready to compromise with the speed. If you ask my personal favorite … its doing it manually. You don’t have to rely on any software/tool. All you have to do is just copy one folder to another location. And you are good to go.
