A meeting at Cern, the world’s largest physics lab, has addressed results that suggest subatomic particles have gone faster than the speed of light

Enormous underground detectors are needed to catch neutrinos, that are so elusive as to be dubbed "ghost particles"

The team has published its work so other scientists can determine if the approach contains any mistakes.

Antonio Ereditato added “words of caution” to his Cern presentation because of the “potentially great impact on physics” of the result.

The speed of light is widely held to be the Universe’s ultimate speed limit, and much of modern physics – as laid out in part by Albert Einstein in his theory of special relativity – depends on the idea that nothing can exceed it.

Thousands of experiments have been undertaken to measure it ever more precisely, and no result has ever spotted a particle breaking the limit.

“We tried to find all possible explanations for this,” the report’s author Antonio Ereditato of the Opera collaboration told BBC News on Thursday evening.

“We wanted to find a mistake – trivial mistakes, more complicated mistakes, or nasty effects – and we didn’t.

“When you don’t find anything, then you say ‘well, now I’m forced to go out and ask the community to scrutinise this’.”

Friday’s meeting was designed to begin this process, with hopes that other scientists will find inconsistencies in the measurements and, hopefully, repeat the experiment elsewhere.

“Despite the large [statistical] significance of this measurement that you have seen and the stability of the analysis, since it has a potentially great impact on physics, this motivates the continuation of our studies in order to find still-unknown systematic effects,” Dr Ereditato told the meeting.

“We look forward to independent measurement from other experiments

Neutrinos come in a number of types, and have recently been seen to switch spontaneously from one type to another.

The Cern team prepares a beam of just one type, muon neutrinos, and sends them through the Earth to an underground laboratory at Gran Sasso in Italy to see how many show up as a different type, tau neutrinos.

In the course of doing the experiments, the researchers noticed that the particles showed up 60 billionths of a second earlier than they would have done if they had travelled at the speed of light.

This is a tiny fractional change – just 20 parts in a million – but one that occurs consistently.

The team measured the travel times of neutrino bunches some 16,000 times, and have reached a level of statistical significance that in scientific circles would count as a formal discovery.

But the group understands that what are known as “systematic errors” could easily make an erroneous result look like a breaking of the ultimate speed limit.

That has motivated them to publish their measurements.

“My dream would be that another, independent experiment finds the same thing – then I would be relieved,” Dr Ereditato told BBC News.

But for now, he explained, “we are not claiming things, we want just to be helped by the community in understanding our crazy result – because it is crazy”

With this new TimeLine, you will now have a center for all the great stories you’ve already shared. This will not just disappear as you update status or share stuffs. you get to keep the old stories as well. Timline is comparatively wider and more flexible than your old facebook profile and is visually more appealing. Profile starts from a big image at the top, which is known as Your Cover and ofcourse you get to choose your cover

Below the cover are your posts, updates, photos and other activities. You can set all of them manually and control the size of each of the items on your profile. You choose what’s featured on your timeline. You can star your favorites to double their size or hide things altogether.

• If the things that you want to add in your profile are not in timeline, you can go back and add them to Timeline.
• Add apps to Timeline – new kind of social app that lets you show the things you like to do on your timeline – the music you listen to, the recipes you try, the runs you take and more

You can start adding some of these new apps today, but timeline won’t be available for a few weeks. When you get your timeline, you can choose to publish it immediately or take a few days to review what’s there and add anything that’s missing.

The Subscribe Feature: Facebook has recently addeed a new feature “Subscribe”. Facebook users can allow others to subscribe to them, without adding them as friend. It is like following a person on twitter only a lot more than that. Subscribing a person on facebook will mean  that you will get every single update of his/hers. Just like receiving your friends’ updates .. only the person you have subscribed to is not your friend.

This feature has received mixed reactions from the users. People are also calling it a feature that will help Stalkers. But.. in response to that, we can only say that its upto to you whether you letpeople to subscribe you or you choose not to.

Indian mobile users now have the option to avoid unwanted telemarketing calls by registering their mobile phone number in the NDNC registry.

The main features :
A customer may choose between ‘fully blocked’ category or ‘partially blocked’ category and The ‘partially blocked’ category, in which case he will receive SMS in the category/categories chosen by him.


There are seven categories :

1. Banking/Insurance/Financial products/credit cards
2. Real Estate
3. Education
4. Health
5. Consumer goods and automobiles
6. Communication/Broadcasting/Entertainment/IT
7. Tourism and Leisure.

To register his number, one can call on 1909 or SMS to 1909. You can check if your number is registered under
DND or Do Not Disturb registry or now. A new system is designed where both Telemarketers and the service providers filter numbers which are under DND. This way even if the Telemarketers try to skip your mobile operator will keep it clean.

A separate numbering series 70XXXXXXXX will be allocated for telemarketers, so that all telemarketing calls can be easily identified. Likewise, a unique SMS header has been mandated for easy identification of commercial SMSs. Even for unregistered numbers, No commercial calls can be placed between 9.00 PM to 9.00AM.


How to Opt in and Out using SMS for DND ?

Change Options by sending SMS to 1909.

Fully blocked : SMS START 0
START 1 : SMS relating to Banking/Insurance/Financial products/credit cards
START 2: SMS relating to Real Estate.
START 3 : SMS relating to Education .
START 4: SMS relating to Health .
START 5 : SMS relating to Consumer goods and automobiles.
START 6 : SMS relating to Communication/Broadcasting/ Entertainment/IT
START 7 : SMS relating to Tourism and Leisure

How much Telemarketers will be penalized for ?

The telemarketers are now required to enter into an agreement with the service providers with a security deposit.

    First offence Rs. 25,000/-
    Second offence, 75,000/-
    Third offence Rs.80,000/-
    Fourth offence Rs.1,20,000/-
    Fifth offence Rs. 1,50,000/-
    Sixth offence Rs.2,50,000/-

These penalties will be deducted by the service providers and will be collected and deposited to TRAI when it happens. Once Blacklisted after 6th offence, they will be dropped from all the service providers for 2 years. IMO these regulations are huge if implemented properly. If the Filter system works and the numbers are unique for telemarketers it gives easy option for subscribers to just cancel the call.

However one keen issue that regularly happens is SMS from numbers which are not registered as TeleMarketers but are used to send SMS or even call. TRAI hopefully one day will come with an option where a compliant can be registered against such numbers.

OLD METHOD:

For customers who would like to register/de-register their request for NDNC registry may dial 1909 or SMS to 1909 with keywords ‘START DND’ for registration and ‘STOP DND’ for de-registration.

Light, feather light

Tab 3G has the classic 7-inch tablet design. It’s a minimalist, gets-the-job-done shape and size. The back cover is all plastic with a faux aluminum look. The front is all capacitive screen with black bezel and three – Home, Options, and Back – touch-sensitive buttons. The tablet looks neat and even though a slightly sturdier build would have been better, the quality of construction is good for its price.

Tab 3G is powered by a 800Mhz processor. There is 512 MB RAM and a 4GB SD card has been bundled with it.

One thing that surprises us about Tablet 3G is its weight. It’s very light, which is good. A simple design and 389 grams weight makes the tablet quite comfortable to use on the move.

Better than the average

Tab 3G ships with the latest version of Android, which is Gingerbread (2.3.4). This means it comes with all Android goodies like tethering, a huge number of apps and a user interface that has made Google’s operating software such a big craze.

More importantly, it’s a capacitive screen with decent touch response. It’s not as buttery smooth as what is found on expensive tablets but works without much fuss. Somewhat better viewing angles – the colours look faded if screen not held at the right angle – would have made the touch screen on Tab 3G truly exceptional for it price.

Tab 3G comes with a 3400 mAh battery. In real life, this translates to all-day computing when the used for accessing mails and Twitter feed etc, occasional web browsing and little bit of gaming.

Worth the money

Reliance Tab is not perfect. But then no tablet – not even iPad – is. What matters is how much it offers for its price. And Tab 3G offers a lot. Despite a modest price of Rs 12,999 Tab 3G manages to give users a compelling tablet experience.

Yes, we would have liked to get a screen with better resolution (like 1024×600) and slightly better viewing angles. But what Tab 3G offers at its price is a pretty compelling deal for anyone looking to buy a tablet on the cheap.

The smartphone market in the World is hot like never before. Nokia is losing its sheen and Samsung and Apple are racing ahead. Consumers have tons of options to choose from. More Smartphones implies more Apps. Looks like.. it will be “The Rise of the Planet of the Apps” … ahah !
