Yes ! You heard it right… Dry Water. If someone asks you – name one thing which is in liquid state and your obvious reply would be Water. How simple is that. But, now scientists have produced water which is dry i.e. in solid(powdered) form. Now you might be wondering why would anyone need dry water.

Dry water looks like a powder, but a quick squeeze is enough to make it a fluid.
Well, the reason behind it is that, it soaks carbon three times better than water, and hence will help us fight against the global warming. The dry water looks just like the powdered sugar and each particle of that powder contains a water droplet coated by a sandy silica coating.
At the American Chemical Society in Boston(US), Ben Carter from the university of Liverpool presented his research and said:- “There’s nothing else quite like it”
The other uses of dry water might be expanding energy source potential of dry gas or storing methane. As told by Carter, their team have also used it as a catalyst in to speed up reactions between hydrogen and maleic acid. Which produces succinic acid, which is a key material to make drugs and food ingredients. The use of dry water particles makes the process greener and energy efficient.
Talking about the history of this, it was actually developed back in 1968, but it was forgotten. It was then rediscovered in 2006, for study purpose and a group of scientist at the University of Liverpool to find a use of it.
As said by Carter – “Hopefully, we may see ‘dry water’ making waves in the future.”
The Dry Water” is actually tiny droplets of water coated in modified silica, better know as sand. The constitute more than 90% of powdered water and silica coating prevents them from collapsing and combining as fluid. In laboratory-scale research, the team found that dry water absorbed over three times as much carbon dioxide as ordinary, uncombined water and silica in the same space of time.
As told to the telegraph – Not only that, dry water technology can also apply to other liquids. The Liverpool University team showed that by transforming a simple emulsion – such as an oil and water mix – into dry water, it could provide a safer way to store and transport potentially harmful industrial materials.
This amazing discovery will surely help to fight global warming and has other applications, but it has also made some jokes look stupid. Since when does spilling water not make something wet? How do you get holy water? Boil the hell out of it! And what about hydrophobia …
