Sony PS3 Problem Fixed – Blames Leap Year Glitch

On March 1, 2010 many PS3 owners encountered with an unwanted surprise, it was actually a Sony Play station 3 Bug which only affected the older model, but it was enough to cause problems. In the gaming world, nothing is more exciting than such kind of surprises. Online gaming through playstation is one of the most interesting form of gaming. You connect to any friend or complete strangers through a network and try to excel in the game, whichever game you choose. So, 1st march was not quite the day for the same.

Whereas, the newer slimmer model of PS3 was unaffected by this problem. Now the area of concern is why it happened? Now, many owners of the older version of the PS3 will upgrade to the newer one.

Griffin McElroy, of Joystiq, is reporting that the problems being experienced trace back to a 8001050F error code. Besides being unable to join PSN, users are having their trophy information corrupted, most likely due to the system clock resetting to “1/1/2000”. Phat owners are reporting even with their system offline the problem is occurring, leading McElroy to surmise the problem may be firmware related.

From Sony, it was advised to keep PS3 off until the issue can be fixed.

The Actual problem: There was a glitch in the internal clock of some PlayStation 3 consoles that recognized 2010 as a leap year and wrongly added a Feb. 29 to the clock.

The good news is that, Sony has resolved this problem by fixing the glitch and now you don’t need to upgrade or thrash your Old fat Playstation3.

According to them as in the blog :
“We are aware that the internal clock functionality in the PS3 units, other than the slim model, recognized the year 2010 as a leap year. Having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1 (both GMT), we have verified that the symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally,” a note on Sony’s PlayStation blog reads.

The Play Station network has almost 40 million registered gamers. The slim version of the PS3 was launched in August 2009. This bug has definitely made some PS gamers frustrated and there is every possibility that 2014 will again bring the same problem. Who knows! Hope it will not happen again and gamers will not face this problem in future.
